Materials used for the production or packaging of food are subject to special requirements. They must be non-toxic and must not alter the taste or smell of the food they come into contact with. Materials that meet these criteria are called food-safe. This includes all materials that come into contact with food during production, transportation and as kitchen accessories. Packaging that protects against dirt and germs is made from various materials such as plastics, paper, cardboard, rubber and degradable cellophane films.
Food-safe substances must comply with the requirements of the statutory framework regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004. The regulation, adopted by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union in 2004, contains the general requirements for food contact in Article 3. According to this, materials used must not secrete any substances that „endanger human health, cause a change in the composition, impair the organoleptic properties of the food or mislead the consumer through labelling“.
Food-safe items are also classified according to their properties such as heat resistance or loading conditions.
All materials and objects tested by the supervisory authorities bear the written notice „For food contact“ or the symbol with cup and fork.
