IBC agitators are indispensable in many production processes - from mixing simple liquids to sophisticated media with increased viscosity. There are numerous very inexpensive IBC agitators on the market. However, this is where it becomes clear that the purchase price alone says little about efficiency, process quality and cost-effectiveness.

The basic design problem of inexpensive IBC agitators

The opening of an IBC is small for design reasons. Many manufacturers of inexpensive IBC agitators respond to this with very small, rigid propellers that fit through easily. This solution is cost-effective - but technically very limited.

A small propeller only generates a low flow rate. In order to still achieve mixing, high speeds must be used.

High speeds mean high losses

The use of small propellers with high speeds has several disadvantages:

  • Increased energy requirement of the agitator
  • Increased air intake into the medium
  • Shear stress on sensitive products

In practice, this design works almost exclusively with water-like, low-viscosity substances. As soon as the viscosity increases, uniform mixing is no longer possible.

Insufficient mixing with viscous media

In the case of paints, coatings, adhesives, additives or cosmetic products, the produced flow often does not reach the edges and corners of the IBC. Dead zones are created, the mixing time is extended and homogeneity suffers.

This poses a considerable risk to reproducible results, especially in quality-critical processes.

The PTM solution - foldable impellers for IBC agitators

AT PTM mechatronics GmbH deliberately uses hinged agitators for IBC agitators. These pass through the opening when folded in and unfold their full geometry in the container.

This results in clear technical advantages:

  • Large effective agitating surface in the IBC
  • Low speeds with high circulation capacity
  • Significantly reduced energy consumption
  • Minimal air intake
  • Homogeneous mixing right into the corners - even at higher viscosities

Conclusion - with IBC agitators, the right design is key

An inexpensive IBC agitator may be sufficient for simple, low-viscosity applications. However, for industrial processes with higher requirements for homogeneity, energy efficiency and product quality, the choice of the right agitator is crucial.

IBC agitators from PTM show that technically sophisticated solutions are more economical in the long term - even if the entry-level price is higher.
