Construction of a complete 2K supply system

In our plant engineering department, we design and build complete agitator technology systems. In this case study, we developed a 2K supply system.

What is a 2K supply system?

2K stands for two components. This means that the supply system provides the downstream process with two components that are mixed together shortly before further processing. As soon as these components come into contact with each other, they begin to react with each other and form a new property. We are familiar with two-component adhesives from everyday practice. Two components from two separate tubes are brought together for bonding. On contact, they harden within seconds. Two-component adhesives therefore often consist of a flexible component and a hardener.

The task

Our customer requires the 2K supply system for the production of a potting compound. This is used for potting electrical assemblies. The two sensitive components of the potting agent have a viscosity of 3,000 mPas (roughly equivalent to the viscosity of gear oil) and 600 mPas (roughly equivalent to the viscosity of liquid wax).

Both components react sensitively on contact with water or atmospheric oxygen and then harden prematurely. They are delivered in 200 l steel drums, must be stirred for processing and then pumped into the casting process.

Our solution

A special exchangeable lid made of stainless steel was designed for the 200 l drums of both components. Due to the different viscosities, the lid for the 600mPas components was equipped with a 16Nm drive and an eco-Cup agitator. The 3,000mPas component was given the stronger 32Nm drive with two eco-Cup agitators. Otherwise, both lids were equipped identically as follows:

  • Clamping ring solution for easy changing of containers
  • Digital speed display (as the stirring process cannot be viewed in the completely closed container)
  • Special pump for abrasive media (due to the quartz content in the components) with a capacity of 3 l/min.
  • Stainless steel suction lance
  • Air inlet with desiccant filter with humidity indicator (to record the ambient humidity)
