O objetivo \u00e9 criar a maior superf\u00edcie poss\u00edvel de transfer\u00eancia de massa entre o g\u00e1s e o l\u00edquido. Em termos simples, isto significa que o g\u00e1s deve ser distribu\u00eddo no l\u00edquido de tal forma que a maior quantidade poss\u00edvel de l\u00edquido entre em contacto com o g\u00e1s. O oposto seria o caso, por exemplo, se o g\u00e1s fosse aplicado apenas \u00e0 superf\u00edcie do l\u00edquido. Consequentemente, apenas a superf\u00edcie do l\u00edquido entraria em contacto com o g\u00e1s e apenas a superf\u00edcie reagiria com o g\u00e1s.<\/p>\n<p>O contacto entre o g\u00e1s e o l\u00edquido deve ent\u00e3o conduzir a uma rea\u00e7\u00e3o. Estas reac\u00e7\u00f5es s\u00e3o necess\u00e1rias nas ind\u00fastrias biotecnol\u00f3gica, qu\u00edmica e farmac\u00eautica. Exemplos disto s\u00e3o a hidrogena\u00e7\u00e3o (adi\u00e7\u00e3o de hidrog\u00e9nio), a oxida\u00e7\u00e3o (adi\u00e7\u00e3o de oxig\u00e9nio) e a fermenta\u00e7\u00e3o (aer\u00f3bica: adi\u00e7\u00e3o de oxig\u00e9nio). A dispers\u00e3o tamb\u00e9m pode ser utilizada para substituir um g\u00e1s no l\u00edquido por outro.<\/p>\n<p>Num processo de gaseifica\u00e7\u00e3o ideal, o g\u00e1s \u00e9 dividido no maior n\u00famero poss\u00edvel de pequenas bolhas de g\u00e1s. Estas s\u00e3o ent\u00e3o distribu\u00eddas o mais uniformemente poss\u00edvel no l\u00edquido sem criar outros processos contraproducentes, como a forma\u00e7\u00e3o de espuma.
