The European EMC Directive defines the term as follows:

„the ability of an apparatus, installation or system to operate satisfactorily in the electromagnetic environment without itself causing electromagnetic disturbance which would be unacceptable to any apparatus, installation or system present in that environment.“

If a device is electromagnetically compatible, it has no effect on other devices or applications. Effects could be interference with the other device or the other application with regard to electrical, electromagnetic, magnetic or sensory fields. This is referred to as galvanic coupling if the currents of two current circuits interfere with each other at a common impedance, or capacitive coupling in the case of interference between various spatially adjacent electrical circuit parts which are coupled as a result of stray capacitances, e.g. inductive coupling in the event of interference caused by changes in the magnetic flux of a magnetic field, e.g. in magnetic resonance applications, and radiation coupling in the event of electromagnetic interference, e.g. in radio or wireless devices.

Devices with electromagnetic compatibility are therefore subject to certain requirements in terms of their design, functionality and component materials. There are EMC guidelines and standards for assessing their compatibility. It is not only the interference generated by the device that is important, but also the susceptibility of the device to interference from the respective application.
