Rotation direction

Since the definition of the direction of rotation of a motor as left or right rotation depends on which side the motor is viewed from, there is a guideline for this. The guideline DIN EN 60034-8 VDE 0530-8: 2014-10 Rotating electrical machines deals in part 8 with connection designations and the direction of rotation. Although DIN is about electrical machines, the principle can be applied to all rotating machines.

The first step is to define the viewing direction. Direction of view is:

on the side applying force, or respectively,
on the side facing the drive shaft end.

In the case of two shaft ends, the viewing direction is:

the side with the larger shaft diameter, or respectively,
the side on which no ventilation, etc. is attached, if both shaft ends have the same diameter.

The direction of rotation can now be designated as follows:

Left hand, counterclockwise
Right hand, clockwise.

With the PTM ATEX agitator technology, all motors, drives and complete agitators are, as standard, counter-clockwise rotating. The direction of rotation can be changed to clockwise on request.
