The Human Engineering Research Laboratories at the University of Pittsburgh developed and built a waterproof wheelchair powered entirely by compressed air. The university decided on the compressed air motor from PTM mechatronics GmbH due to its watertight construction according to IP68. Accordingly, the engine can be completely submerged under water.

The new wheelchair named PneuChair was first presented in April 2017 at the 25 acre theme park in Morgan’s Wonderland in San Antonio, Texas, which was built for people with disabilities. Morgan’s Wonderland now has 10 PneuChair for its Inspiration Island water park, which opened in spring 2017.
