Food-safe

Materials that are used for the production or packaging of food are subject to special requirements. They must be non-toxic and must not alter the taste or smell of the food with which they come into contact. Materials that meet these criteria are called food-safe. This includes all substances that come into contact with food during production, transport and as kitchen accessories. The packaging, which protects against dirt and germs, is made of various materials such as plastics, paper, cardboard, rubber and degradable cellulose film.

Food-safe substances must meet the requirements of the statutory framework regulation (EC) No 1935/2004. The regulation, adopted in 2004 by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, contains in Article 3 the general requirements for food contact. According to this, the materials used must not secrete any substances “that endanger human health, cause a change in the composition, impair the organoleptic properties of the food or mislead the consumer through naming and labeling”.

Food-safe objects are also classified according to their properties such as heat resistance or loading conditions.

All materials and objects tested by the supervisory authorities bear the written notice “For food contact” or the symbol with a beaker and fork.
